Aerospace; Space, 1960 Flown USAF Space Discovery XVII, To NASA's First Administrator, Honorable T. Keith Glennan, Exceptionally RARE and FLOWN space mail cover by U.S. satellite Discoverer 17, this rare cover was contained in the Discoverer XVII satellite launched by the U.S. Air Force into orbit from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, November 12, 1960, and subsequently recovered by C-119 aircraft over the mid-Pacific Ocean, The cover is boldly marked, "FIRST AIR MAIL-OUTER SPACE-" on the front of the cover, would be the centerpiece of a world class space collection, USAF fact sheet accompanying the flown cover states, "On the thirty-first pass, after traveling approximately one million miles, the capsule from Discoverer 17 was released from the orbiting satellite at 2:31 pm PST. At 3:05pm PST, Captain Gene W. Jones piloting C-119 Pelican II snagged the capsule on his first attempt (over the mid-Pacific)". Ellington-Zwisler #39C1 (reported 28 flown), This is only the second time the rare flown Discoverer XVII cover has been offered at auction. At auction in California, 2008, similar cover and letter addressed to General Lyman L. Lemnitzer sold for over $35,000 . Estimate $30,000-35,000.
